The Unknown - Russia 2003 is a collection of works by Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra. He is a photographer who has been working on documentary works on the former Soviet Union for a long time, and together with film director and journalist Arnold van Bruggen, he has compiled a series of works that document the actual conditions and changes in the region over the five years leading up to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, which attracted worldwide attention. The series was compiled into the book The Sochi Project: An Atlas of War and Tourism in the Caucasus. This book is also a collection of works on the theme of Russia, consisting of portraits of ordinary people taken when Hornstra was still in his late 20s and traveled around the Chelyabinsk region. This is a significant book that was released in 2022, with various thoughts about Russia, which has become globally isolated since the invasion of Ukraine.
