This book is a collection of images taken by William Klein, one of the most representative photographers of the 20th century, during his stay in Japan in August 1961, titled "Dance Happening June 1961". Klein visited the museum after the dancers Tatsumi Hijikata, Kazuo Ohno, and Yoshito Ohno, who later became great artists, asked him to come and photograph them at their rehearsal studio. However, he was not impressed by the rehearsal and suggested taking them out onto the streets. And so an unprecedented, completely improvised happening began. The location moved from the rehearsal studio in Meguro to Shinbashi and Ginza, and they performed on large and small streets and inside train stations. Klein reflexively captured them on camera as they walked around and performed. The men, who did not look like "dancers" at all, improvised happenings, and Klein, who did not understand the language, responded brilliantly, creating a new chemical reaction. This book presents the flow of one day in chronological order and is made up of over 500 images, some of which have never been published before.
