``Black and White'' is a photo book by Fred Herzog, a photographer born in Germany and active in Canada. In 1953, at the age of 23, he taught himself to take color photographs. He acquired his skills by taking approximately 120,000 street photographs, and in 1957 found a job as a medical photographer in Bangover. In 1961, he became head of the medical photography department at the University of British Columbia, a position he held for the next 29 years, while also engaging in photography education at other universities. Since the 1970s, he has held solo exhibitions in Canada, but since 2000, he has attracted worldwide attention with solo exhibitions at photo galleries in New York. This book is a collection of black-and-white works, whereas until now only color works have been published. Like Saul Leiter and others, even when shot in black and white, they are sometimes painterly, dramatic, and beautiful. .
