"Many Are Called (Acceptable)" is a photobook published by the master American photographer Walker Evans in 1964. The meaningful title is taken from the Gospel of Matthew, the opening passage of the New Testament, which reads, "Many are called, but few are chosen." This humorous and poetic photobook was compiled between 1939 and 1941 by Evans, accompanied by his student Helen Levitt, who hid a camera in his coat and captured the casual expressions and gestures of New York subway passengers. It is well known that in the 1960s and 1970s, Nobuyoshi Araki also secretly photographed subway passengers and attempted to publish a photobook, only to abandon the idea after learning that Evans' "Many are called" had already been published. Incidentally, Nobuyoshi Araki's work was published in 2005 as "SUBWAY LOVE." (The first half of the book has water damage.)
