"Henry Darger's Room 851 Webster (Second Printing)" is a collection of works by Henry Darger (1892-1973), a key figure in American outsider art. While working as a janitor in a corner of Chicago, Darger continued to paint manuscripts and illustrations as a hobby. In old age, he moved into an institution, where he later passed away quietly. The owner of the apartment he rented before moving was asked by Darger to dispose of all of his belongings, which he had lived in for 40 years. During the process, he unearthed a manuscript titled "In the Realm of the Unreal." The owner, Nathan Lerner, a former student of Moholy-Nagy at the Illinois Institute of Technology and an industrial designer, recognized the artistic value of this artifact and used his connections to introduce it to art professionals. He stopped the dismantling of the "studio" midway and worked to maintain it for nearly 30 years. Darger's life finally came into the light of day in 2000, and the American dream that followed is well known. This book is mainly composed of photographs of the studio taken by Keizo Kitajima and others who visited for a magazine interview shortly before the studio was demolished. Written in both English and Japanese. Second printing.
