A collection of works by Japanese photographer Ernest Sato (1927-1990). Born to a Japanese father and an American mother, he graduated from Waseda University. After the war, he moved to the United States and majored in music history and art history at Oklahoma State University and Columbia University. After graduating, I worked in New York as a bank clerk, but I saved money and bought Leica and film and went on a shooting trip to Mexico. The following year, he quit his job as a salaryman and started working as a photojournalist. In the 1960s, he returned to Japan and worked as a correspondent for LIFE magazine. After that, he began teaching at Kyoto City University of Arts, becoming a professor and teaching younger generations. By the way, Sato's wife is Toshi Sato, the 11th owner of Tawaraya Ryokan, a long-established luxury inn in Kyoto that was once said to be Horai (Atami) in the east and Tawaraya in the west. This book is a collection of works published at the 916 Gallery, which was directed by Yoshihiko Ueda, one of Japan's leading photographers, and was edited by Ueda. Most of the works are from the New York era, but in the latter half, portraits of celebrities such as Sayuri Yoshinaga and Kakuei Tanaka are also posted.
