"Piercing the Darkness" is a photo book by American female photographer Susan S. Bank. Bank is known for its photo book "Cuba: Campo Adentro" (2008), which has been chasing tobacco farmers in Pinar del Rio, Cuba for six years, and shows the daily lives of the farmers. This work, which was presented at "Fototeca" in Havana in 2004, was praised in various places, and this self-published photo book attracted attention such as being selected as the best book in "PHoto España" in 2009. This book is Bank's 2nd photobook and consists of photographs taken in Cuba as in the previous work. This is a lyrical book that captures the sights of cities and regions from the photographs taken from 1999 to 2009, including those presented at the 2006 Havana Biennale. Black-and-white photographs taken with the Leica M6 capture the lively everyday life of Cuba and the rich facial expressions of people, sometimes appearing as poetic (dramatic) sights.
