Onshiro Koshiro (1891-1955) is a pioneer of Japanese abstract paintings, who gave high artisticity to creative prints and left a great footprint in modern Japanese art. Privately with Yumeji Takehisa, known for the Taisho romance when he was a teenager, in 1914 he started the doujinshi “Teiei”, a woodcut and poetry doujinshi, with Yukichi Tanaka and Shizuo Fujimori, who attend Tokyo Art School. He has been working on book binding since his student days, and later became known as a souvenir. He explores the combination of poetry, music and prints, and also uses photography to create expressions, and in the latter years after the war he concentrates on abstract art. This book “Book Art” is a collection of works by Onji, who has worked on many book bindings, discussing Western books and contemporary Japanese book design from their own bindings. Since it was published in 1952, which was close to its later years, there was a sense of culmination, and the text part of the first half details the design and structure of the book. The second half introduces actual examples. In overseas books such as France and Germany, and the part called “Recent Japanese Binding”, we introduce books by Shigeru Hatsuyama, Yusaku Kamekura, Takashi Kawano and Kiyoshi Hasegawa. Lastly, a book bound by Onji was introduced, and the contents are also substantial.
