"Goat's Lungs: Okinawa 1968-2005" is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Kenshichi Hirashiki. Hirashiki is a representative Okinawan photographer who was active from the late 1960s to the 2000s. In the late 1960s, the Okinawa Struggle broke out on the island over the joint statement of the Japanese and US governments and the return of Okinawa to the mainland, and many photographers visited the island and presented the reality of the situation through their photographs. In the midst of this, Hirashiki was a photographer who did not turn his attention to the mainstream of the struggle, but continued to follow the people living on the "island" and continued to capture Okinawa with an inner gaze. Before the return, women who supported their families by selling themselves in restaurants and brothels were considered "shameful" after the return, and were chased away to entertainment districts and islands. His works depicting the lives of people living before and after the war are a "microcosm" of Okinawa that tells of its unique history. The works of Kenshichi Hirashiki, who avoided the center stage and continued to "take pictures of shadows" backstage, show a different image of Okinawa from that of photographers such as Toshiaki Kanayama and Shomei Tomatsu, who later immigrated to Okinawa. They portray an Okinawa that Okinawans could only imagine and express because they were Okinawans. This book, "Goat's Lungs," is the last photo book that Hirashiki left behind during his lifetime. First edition published in 2007. Signed by the author .
