Gyahtei (Signed) is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Manabu Yamanaka. After working as an assistant to an advertising photographer for over four years, Manabu Yamanaka left Amagasaki, Osaka for Tokyo at the age of 23 and went independent. He started his career as a commercial photographer, but felt a difference in the quality of advertising photography and the kind of photography he wanted to pursue. Wanting to master his own world, he began producing works and held his first solo exhibition, Arahant, in Tokyo in 1989. While living in Tokyo, he presents his works through a gallery in New York. This book includes six series that Yamanaka produced over the course of 25 years. "Arahant" features the appearances of homeless people; "Fujokan" features a bird's-eye view of decaying animal corpses; "Gyahtei" features nude portraits of old women; "Douji" features infants living side-by-side with death in poor areas; "Jodo" features people with physical disabilities born with deformities; and "Mukung Manmanmanran" features a removed fetus. Although all of these works are sensational and difficult to look at, they depict "poverty, old age, illness, death... the 'Buddha nature' that exists within the things people tend to avoid." Signed and stamped by the photographer .
