Pictures is a photo book by Japanese photographer Shinzo Shimao (1948-) and his wife, photographer Tokuko Shiota (1940-). Shimao's parents are writer Toshio Shimao and Mio, and he spent his childhood on Amami Oshima, where he studied photography at Tokyo Zokei University's Department of Photography. He has published many works, including ``Maho-chan,'' a photo of his daughter, essayist Maho Shimao, and other works depicting the lives of ordinary people in China. Ushioda studied photography with Seiji Otsuji at the Kuwasawa Design Institute, then served as a lecturer at the same school and Tokyo Zokei University, and started working as a freelancer around 1975. He is known for his work ``Refrigerator,'' which is a fixed-point photograph of a typical household refrigerator, and ``Book Scenery,'' which won the Domon Ken Prize in 2018. This book is made up of photographs taken during a trip to Guangdong Province, China, and is a set of private edition booklets divided into subjects: ``Objects'' by Shimao and ``People'' by Ushioda. It records fragments of local life, such as things sold on the streets, cars, motorcycles, and billboards, as well as people, workers, and children standing on street corners. The steady breathing of everyday people is captured together with the peaceful time.
