The Train NYC 1984 is a photobook by Canadian-born photographer Brian Young. Brian first visited New York in 1984 to study photography at ICP, and was surprised to find America in the midst of an economic recession that had been continuing since the mid-1970s with no end in sight. Crime and drugs were rampant, and the subway was one of the most feared spaces for tourists. This is a collection of works set in the New York subway, taken under such circumstances. Around the same time, Magnum Photo's master Bruce Davidson's Subway and Swiss photographer Willy Spiller's Subway New York -Menschen im untergrund- were released, both of which have been reprinted and have been revised in recent years, and are considered to be masterpieces of photobooks, but this work by Brian is also very wonderful. Unlike both works, it is composed in black and white, but it is a book that is captivating with its powerful illustrations that convey the situation and atmosphere of the time, and its stunning book design.
