Japanese photographer Jun Morinaga (1937-2018) presents the photo collection "River: Reflections (Signed)." Known for his work as an assistant to Eugene Smith, the American photographer who brought Minamata disease, a pollution-related disease, to the world, Jun Morinaga graduated from the Department of Photography at Nihon University College of Art in 1960. He joined the photography department at Iwanami Productions in 1961 and became Smith's assistant in 1962. In 1969, he held a solo exhibition, "Moment Monument," and the following year won the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award. Since then, he has exhibited his work regularly. This is Morinaga's first photobook, composed of images primarily of Tokyo's rivers (then known as sewers). The photographs, taken in the early 1960s, capture the sluggish river surface, covered in mud and oil, the corpses of fish, and riverbanks. The unique artistic expression, reminiscent of a monochrome abstract painting, and the binding by Kohei Sugiura, who also worked on Kikuji Kawada's "Maps," make this a photobook of the finest quality. "These photographs feature no real people. Yet to me, they seem to swirl relentlessly within, harboring the various undercurrents of resentment in our time" (Eugene Smith). Includes shipping box. Signed by the photographer .
