"Past" is a photobook by internationally acclaimed Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. As explained in the afterword, this book was born from a negative titled "I, Tokyo" that was discovered in a storeroom during preparations for the 1993 exhibition "Love You Tokyo," which he held with photographer Koshio Kuwahara at the Setagaya Art Museum. (Another negative discovered at this time, "After the War," is also included in the photobook.) The cover features Izumi Suzuki, a writer and actress known for her work in Araki's photobooks. The black-and-white photographs were taken between September 1973 and August 1974, shortly after Araki quit his job at Dentsu, where he was training as a photographer, while the color photographs were taken in August 1993. The photographs include snapshots of Tokyo and female nudes. "I had been wanting to publish a photo book called 'The Past' for a long time, so I decided to change the title to 'The Past'. I wanted to make new prints of these photos, so this summer I printed 789 of them on a 4-sheet paper. I gave them to Suei Akira along with a bonus set of EPL color photos taken with a Nikon Mini with a 28mm lens" (from the book).
