Picture Book is a photo-poetry collection by one of Japan's leading poets, Tanikawa Shuntaro. This book is a "self-published limited edition with photographs taken by the young Tanikawa Shuntaro himself, reprinted for the first time in 54 years as a popular edition" (from the obi). The original book, published in 1956 as Tanikawa's fourth collection of poems in a limited edition of 300 copies, has even been called a "phantom". Tanikawa later created photo-poetry collections together with photographers Tanji Yasutaka, Momose Tsunehiko, Araki Nobuyoshi, and Tabuchi Shozo, and this book was the starting point for this. The 17 poems included in the book have been reprinted in subsequent publications, but the 20 photographs were published only in this book, and all of them are black and white with hands as the motif. Regarding the reprinting, French literature scholar and poet Kaneji Yamada explains, "Poetry and photographs complement each other's images, and even enter into dialogue with each other, creating a more diverse and three-dimensional 'poetry.'"
