A photo book by Japanese photographer Yasuo Higa, "Birth Island, Okinawa-American to Japanese-". Yasuo Higa, a photographer representing Okinawa after the war. Born in the Philippines as a child of an immigrant, he got a job as a police officer, but when the B52 of the U.S. military crashed at his place of work and felt the danger of his life move on. After studying news photography at a vocational school in Tokyo, he initially took pictures to convey the tremendous reality of Okinawa, but gradually moved away from the news photography and relied on his own perspective that the Okinawans saw, felt, and thought about. As I started taking pictures, I started to release the shutter from the inside. From the encounter with critic Kenichi Tanigawa, who I met in the mid-1970s, I became interested in the "festivals" held on the islands that expressed the solemn relationship between humans and gods, and conveyed the history, climate, and culture of Okinawa. I was devoted to creative activities. This book is composed of illustrations taken by Higa before and after his return to the mainland in 1972. A book that is fascinated not only by historical facts and criticism, but also by the warm affection and outstanding artistry of locals.
