"Marevelous Tales of Black Ink," a photobook by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, also known as "Araki," is a collection of photographs born from an intense relationship with his subjects, as exemplified by "Sentimental Journey," a collection of photographs from his honeymoon with his wife, Yoko. This book, too, presents an erotic and radical aspect, while intensely depicting the relationship between Araki and his subjects. Originally a compilation of a series published in the SM magazine "SM Sniper," it features the unique situation of photographing women in bondage, and further processing such as covering the women's private parts with black ink on the prints. Up to this point, it is the same as the collection of the same title published by Araki's own label in the 1990s, but this book published by Morel goes further, with Araki's own words written in black ink on the illustrations, and also interweaving images of flowers alternately. It is a work typical of Araki's recent work, with an even greater emphasis on sex, life, and even the world of death. Text by Simon Baker, curator at Tate Modern (English only). Limited edition of 1000 copies.
