"Kimono" is a photobook by Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2024), one of Japan's leading photographers. Active from the 1950s, he formed "VIVO" with Shomei Tomatsu and Ikko Narahara, and is an important artist who pioneered subjective and avant-garde expression in postwar Japanese photography. From "Rose Punishment," which featured Yukio Mishima as the model, to "Kamaitachi," a collaboration with Tatsumi Hijikata, he expressed the body, life and death, eroticism and mythology in dense monochrome, establishing a high international reputation. "Kimono" is an unusual small series created in 1963, the same year as "Rose Punishment," when Hosoe was 29 years old, inspired by Aya Koda's novel "Kimono." With Miki Aoyama as the model, it symbolically depicts the life of a woman from marriage to life with her husband, his death, and her journey to independence through six photographs. This book is a precious publication that Hosoe himself was involved in completing, from selecting the photographs and layout to proofreading the print, before his passing in 2024. It is Nazraeli Press's "One Picture Book Two" Vol. 45, limited to 500 copies. It includes one original print with the Hosoe family's seal stamped on the reverse side.
