"Summer Nights, Walking" is a photobook by American photographer Robert Adams (1937-). Participating in the historic 1975 exhibition "New Topographics," Adams is a leading post-war American photographer who has captured the changing landscapes of the American West through serene black-and-white photographs. This work is a series of photographs taken in the mid-1970s while walking around Longmont, Colorado, where he once lived, on summer nights. Ordinary suburban landscapes—houses, roads, trees, and fields illuminated by streetlights and moonlight—appear with a quietness and mysterious atmosphere different from that of daytime. Originally published in 1985 as "Summer Nights," it was reorganized in 2009 as "Summer Nights, Walking" with the addition of previously unpublished works and a significant revision of the selection and sequence of photographs. Furthermore, in 2023, Steidl published an expanded new edition containing 69 photographs. This is one of Adams' representative series, which he has refined over many years, capturing not only beauty and tranquility, but also the anxiety, surprise, and sense of the unknown felt in darkness.
