"Sarangran" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Kotori Kawashima (1980-). She has won the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for Photography for "Mirai-chan" and the Ihei Kimura Photography Award for "Myojo," and has captured the intimate closeness with people close to her, as well as the light and emotions that suddenly appear in everyday life, with fresh colors. Kawashima is also known for her long-term projects set in Taiwan, but for this work, she turned to Seoul, South Korea. From the fall of 2023 to the spring of the following year, she repeatedly visited the city, walking through the streets as the seasons changed, and photographing the people she encountered, the Han River, residential areas, the night streets, and fragments of everyday life. "Sarangran" is a neologism created by Kawashima from the sound of "사랑 (sarang)," which means love in Korean, and it also somehow overlaps with the sound of "사람 (saram)," which means person. Rather than observing foreign lands from the outside, Kawashima's characteristic photographs draw you closer to the place by meeting people and sharing time with them, resulting in a book where his love for people and curiosity about cities gently blend together. In 2025, he also held his first large-scale solo exhibition in Korea with the same title as this book at the Seoul Museum of Art.
