"Are They Rocks Or Clouds?" is a collection of works by Italian photographer Marina Caneve (1988-). With a background in architecture, Caneve explores the relationship between environment and society by traversing photography and research. In this work, she focuses on hydrogeological disasters in the Dolomites mountain range in northeastern Italy. While typical disaster photography records events and their traces afterward, this work is an unusual document that looks at a "disaster that hasn't happened yet," based on the assumption that the floods and landslides that struck the area in 1966 could happen again in the future. By combining her own photographs with archives and research materials that convey past disasters, and collaborating with geologist Emiliano Oddone and anthropologist Annibale Salsa, she portrays the memories of the people who live in the land, their coexistence with danger, and the beauty and fragility of nature in a multi-layered way. Winner of the 2018 Cortona On The Move Photobook Dummy Award and published by Fw:Books, this highly acclaimed book features Hans Gremmen's masterful book design reminiscent of geological strata, and won the Premio Marco Bastianelli's Best Italian Photobook in 2020.
