"1972 - Nakagin Capsule Tower" is a collection of works by Noritaka Minami, a photographer and artist based in the United States. Through his photography, Minami has explored the history and memories etched into places, and in this work, he documents the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building, designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The title "1972" refers to the year the building was completed. As a symbol of Metabolism, a post-war Japanese avant-garde architectural movement, it envisioned a future residence that would metabolize along with the city, with 140 interchangeable capsules attached to two cores. Minami's focus was not on the exterior, but on the interiors of individual capsules after approximately 40 years. He quietly captures how spaces designed to the same specifications have taken on different traces of life through the furniture, books, curtains, alterations, and neglect of their inhabitants. Published in 2015, amid concerns about the building's disappearance, it is the first monograph to focus on the Nakagin Capsule Tower. Now that the building has been demolished in 2022, it is also a valuable record that conveys the passage of time for the "future" envisioned in 1972.
