"Flash Up (Second Printing)" is a photobook by Seiji Kurata, one of Japan's leading photographers. Kurata majored in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, and after graduating, he worked as an art teacher before spending a period in a small factory. He began photography before turning 30. He was one of the first students to attend the legendary "Workshop Photography School," founded by Shomei Tomatsu, Nobuyoshi Araki, and Daido Moriyama. After that, he worked as a freelancer and held a solo exhibition in 1979, "Street Photo Random Tokyo 1975-1979." The works from that exhibition led to him winning the "5th Kimura Ihei Award," marking a sensational debut. This book is his memorable first photobook, published to commemorate the aforementioned exhibition and award. It consists of street snapshots of Shinjuku and Ikebukuro, taken in the late 1970s. This collection vividly captures the little-known lives of gay men, sex workers, yakuza, right-wing extremists, and biker gangs with intense strobe lighting, preserving the terror, pleasure, and desire lurking in the shadows. The beauty inherent in violent and provocative depictions, the love found in a cold, objective gaze—the diverse interplay of these images creates a historically significant work that pioneered new frontiers in photography. First edition, second printing. (Slight damage to cover due to shrinkage)
