"Takenokozoku (Signed)" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Noriko Shibuya (1953). Shibuya studied photography under Shomei Tomatsu and Daido Moriyama, and from 1976 to 1982 participated in Image Shop CAMP, an independent gallery where Daido Moriyama and Keizo Kitajima were active. This book compiles photographs of the "Takenokozoku" taken every Sunday from 1979 to 1982 when she went to the pedestrian zone of Harajuku. The young people, dressed in flamboyant costumes and dancing in the streets to music playing from cassette decks, developed into a street culture that symbolized Harajuku in the early 1980s. Shibuya's color photographs vividly record not only their flamboyant attire, but also their dancing bodies, the expressions of their friends, and the distance between them and onlookers, showing how the young people transformed the city streets into their own space for expression. The book includes a preface by Daido Moriyama and Shibuya's own essay, "Sunday Heroes." This is a limited edition photobook of 350 copies, published for the first time in a complete form by Area Books in France in 2024, more than 40 years after the photographs were taken.
