"Shuku/Gen" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Risaku Suzuki (1963-) and Korean photographer Kim Ji-young. Suzuki, who has consistently questioned place, time, and the very act of "seeing" using subjects such as Kumano, cherry blossoms, and snow, and who won the Ihei Kimura Photography Award in 2000 for "PILES OF TIME," and Kim, who has mainly worked on art documentaries, collaborated on this work. This book was created in connection with "Shuku/Gen," an international co-production of a play between Japan, China, and Korea, which was conceived as a starting point for confronting the Great East Japan Earthquake. Prior to the play's performance, the two photographers traveled to Shanghai, Suzhou, Seoul, Sendai, Tono, and Aomori, places associated with the characters, to take photographs. Rather than simply documenting the stage, the photographs captured in each location gently resonate with the play's narrative, creating new stories that cannot be reduced to explanations. Published by the Japan Foundation and the Aomori Museum of Art, with art direction by Hideki Nakajima, this book is born from a collaborative project where photography and theater, land and memory intersect.
