"Material" is a photobook by Tobias Kruse (1979-), a photographer based in Berlin, Germany. Kruse studied with Ute Mahler at the Ostkreuz Photography School and participated in Arno Fischer's masterclass, and is now a member of the photography collective "OSTKREUZ," making him one of the leading photographers in contemporary German photography. While his work is based on a documentary perspective that looks at society and humanity, in recent years he has been producing works that turn his gaze towards more personal memories and emotions. This book is his first full-fledged collection of photographs taken over a period of about 10 years, starting in 2008. Fragments of everyday life that at first glance seem insignificant—the back of a young child standing on the beach, a man taking off his glasses, a bird perched on a wire fence, friends and family, landscapes from his travels—are strung together in a structure that fuses a "diary" and a "picture atlas." Rather than editing in chronological order or narrative, this book's core principle is an attempt to highlight "the intensity of the present moment" through the interplay between photographs. While it is a personal album, it quietly reflects the accumulation of time and memories in one's life.
