"Rephotograph Dec.2018" is a collection of works by Japanese artist Jun Iizuka (1987-). Born in Niigata Prefecture, he studied at Yokohama College of Art and Nagaoka Institute of Design Graduate School, and currently explores the relationship between photography and memory through both creative work and research. From the beginning, he has focused on the functions of memory, namely "encoding, retention, and recall," and has used existing photographs to retrieve fading memories, such as in "STARDUST," which reconstructs family photographs taken by his grandmother that were found among his grandfather's belongings. In this work, he practices the act of "REPHOTOGRAPH," in which he routinely photographs photographs he has taken in the past again. He has turned the process of recalling memories by looking at past images and accumulating them as new images by re-photographing them into a work of art. Published in a limited edition of 60 copies in collaboration with DOOKS, this work is the starting point of a continuing publishing project that will expand to multiple volumes. This book clearly expresses Iizuka's fundamental question, "How do photographs retain and recall memories?", which is also connected to his current research on found photography.
