This is a collection of works by Rieko Shiga, one of Japan's leading photographers. In 2008, Shiga fell in love at first sight with the beauty of the sea and pine forest, and moved to the Shiogama district of Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture. There, she became rooted in the region, working together with the community, and creating works with the participation of residents while weaving oral history. This series was published in 2013 as "Spiral Coast" (Akakasha), but it was first shown at an exhibition held at Sendai Mediatheque the previous year. Furthermore, Shiga has continued to observe the area while reflecting on reconstruction plans and human activities since the Great East Japan Earthquake. This monograph was published simultaneously with an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, coinciding with her receiving the 3rd Tokyo Contemporary Art Award, an award for mid-career artists run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Arts and Space. This book weaves together Shiga's long-standing work with images (illustrations) and words.
