"Venedig. Im Spiegel des Meeres: Fuenf Blicke auf einen Mythos," published by the German publisher mareverlag, is an ambitious photobook themed "Venice as a Myth," in which five photographers capture the city on the water from their own unique perspectives. The participants are four Magnum Photos photographers (at the time of publication) Martin Parr, Paolo Peregrin, Georgy Pinkassov, and Mark Power, as well as German photographer Robert Voit, who studied under Thomas Ruff. Parr humorously observes tourists, Pinkassov depicts a poetic world woven from light and reflection, Peregrin captures the waterfront and people's lives in profound monochrome, Mark Power quietly documents the daily lives of the islands from a distance from the tourist spots, and Voit reflects the magnificence of Venice with fantastical colors. Each of the five photographers confronts the city with their own distinct photographic language. Even when photographing the same location, the landscapes, moments, and atmospheres that emerge are vastly different, revealing the multifaceted charm of Venice throughout the book. Through the collaboration of master photographers, this book demonstrates how a single city can generate diverse expressions, offering a unique pleasure that only a photobook can provide.
