"Kindness Is Not Love" is a collaboration between Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, and Shuntaro Tanikawa, one of Japan's leading poets. Araki and Tanikawa have both published an unparalleled number of works to date. While their 2006 collaborative work, "The Sky in Photographs," is well-known, this book was published 10 years earlier. Araki has taken landscape, portrait, and nude photographs, to which Tanikawa has added poetry. Tanikawa's poems seem to speak on behalf of the female models. However, those voices also seem to question the very essence of Araki as a photographer, making it quite intriguing. The following is an excerpt: "There was nothing but kindness, but kindness is not love, kindness is lukewarm water, and I became soggy. I wish you had slapped me, I wish you had been furious, I wish you had killed me. You only praised me, with those two cold eyes behind your glasses, with a kindness that is a man's, a desire's, endless, fruitless kindness." A poetic book by a photographer, poet, and model.
