"Erotica" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Akiko Isobe. After graduating from Musashino Art University, Isobe has continued to produce her own work while simultaneously working on visual production for advertisements, magazines, and music. She has captured artificial colors and textures, and the atmosphere of desire that permeates the city, with her unique sensibility. In this work, the bodies of models, cosmetics, food, plastic products, and miscellaneous goods are placed on the screen as equivalent entities, and the fetishistic sense that permeates the consumer space of contemporary Tokyo is intensely brought to life. The vivid and lustrous colors are at first glance pop and glamorous, but there is also a sense of emptiness and unease beneath the surface, and a feeling of unease about the "Instagrammable" surface itself in the age of social media. The title "erotica" does not simply mean sexual representation, but seems to refer to the very sense of the city where people and things, desire and image circulate at high speed. Connecting with contemporary photography beyond fashion photography and advertising expression, this book reflects the current urban sensibility in which artificiality and intimacy, fascination and unease coexist.
