"Ancient Ray" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Keiko Shibata. Since the late 1990s, Shibata has been visiting the Kasuga district of Ibigawa Town, Gifu Prefecture, and has continued her work while listening to the stories, memories, and traditions of the people who live there. She is known for her unique practice of trying to capture in photographs the words and memories that have been passed down from person to person, rather than simply as a regional record or folklore document, and she was highly acclaimed for a series of works that led to "Listening and Transcribing, Kasuga" and "Ancient Life," which was exhibited at the Nikon Salon. Her stance of viewing photography not only as a device for recording reality, but also as a medium for evoking invisible time and presence has consistently been at the core of Shibata's work. This work is also an important book in that exploration. The title, "Ancient Light," evokes traces of distant time that reach the present moment, and depicts a world in which past and present, life and death, memory and reality quietly intersect through landscapes, nature, and the presence of people. This privately published collection, with its intimate feel, encapsulates Shibata's gaze, which has continuously observed the memories accumulated in the land and the activities of humankind. It occupies an important position in understanding his later representative works.
