"Sophisticated #1" is a work by Hong Kong photographer Chan Wai-kang (1976-). Raised in an environment where his father was a newspaper photographer, Chan Wai-kang taught himself photography and has published dozens of photobooks and artist books, mainly through self-publishing, making him one of the leading figures in Hong Kong's local photobook culture. Known for his works that capture the everyday life of the city, such as markets, entertainment districts, residential areas, and back alleys, he has also focused on small-batch production that does not assume mass production or distribution, and has viewed the photobook itself as a platform for expression. This work is an instant camera print produced in a limited edition of 15 copies, and rather than being a typical photobook, it has the character of an artist piece with a distinct presence for each individual work. It is also interesting that he presents the photograph not as a record but as a material object, using the extremely personal and improvisational medium of instant film, and it can be seen as a work that symbolizes Chan Wai-kang's attitude towards the self-publishing culture that he has cultivated over many years.
