"My Beloved Chiro" is a photo collection by Nobuyoshi Araki (1940-), one of Japan's leading photographers. This book is a collection of photographs of Chiro, the beloved cat of Araki and his wife, Yoko. Chiro, whom Araki describes as "my lover, and my life," came to Araki in March 1988 when he was four months old, but initially Araki disliked cats. However, he completely changed his attitude, saying, "A immediately contracted trichomoniasis from Chiro," and "Oh my, he's just so cute." The book captures Chiro behaving freely on the balcony, on the roofs of neighbors' houses, on the sofa, in the shower, in Yoko's arms, on Araki's stomach while he sleeps... and Araki lovingly snapping photographs of him. Text is interspersed throughout, directly conveying Araki's feelings for Chiro. Many of the photographs were taken in 1989, a time when Yoko was hospitalized with uterine fibroids and absent from work (she passed away in 1990). It seems that Chiro served as a subject onto which Araki projected his sentimental mood. Like Masahisa Fukase's "Sasuke," this is a book that captures the intimate relationship between a cat and a photographer. First edition, 6th printing.
