"Woman in Kyoto" is a photobook by Japanese photographer RYU-SEI. In the 1990s, Japanese publishing culture saw the emergence of many photographic expressions that superimposed images of cities onto images of women, and this work, too, creates a unique atmosphere against the backdrop of the time and emotions accumulated in Kyoto. The women standing amidst the scenery of the ancient capital—cobblestone streets, townhouses, narrow alleys, and nighttime lights—are not merely models, but are portrayed as beings that embody the memories and humidity of the city itself. While containing the sensuality that the title evokes, there is also a sense of stillness, decadence, and a somewhat manufactured fantasy that differs from the touristy image of Kyoto. Coinciding with the post-bubble economy era in which Japan once again turned its attention to "wa" (Japanese style) and old townscapes, this work is deeply imbued with the unique Japanese eroticism and subcultural sensibilities of the 90s. This is a collection of works that conveys the atmosphere of an era that sought to capture the very image of the city of "Kyoto" through female portraits.
