Known affectionately as "Araki" for his distinctive appearance, Nobuyoshi Araki is one of Japan's leading photographers. This book, "Love on the Left Eye," is a photobook published in conjunction with an exhibition held at Taka Ishii Gallery in 2014. The previous year, in 2013, Araki lost sight in his right eye due to central retinal artery occlusion. Nevertheless, he turned this handicap to his advantage, continuing to create, and this series is the result. In this series, the right half of the image, which represents the field of vision of his closed right eye, is painted black. The images are printed by painting over the right half of the positive film. The contrast between the clear left side and the blacked-out right side is thought to be a metaphor for life and death (Eros and Thanatos), which Araki has dealt with in his photography. His creative drive, which seems to grow stronger in defiance of his physical limitations after suffering from cancer and losing his sight, his quick wit in overcoming adversity, and his courage to make even adversity a part of his creation, speak to the greatness of Araki as a photographer. As always, the title is a made-up word, a twist on a masterpiece by Ed van der Elsken. This rare book sold out very quickly after its release. Limited to 300 copies.
