States of America is a photo book by British photographer Michael Ormerod. Born in Cheshire, a rural town in the northwest of England, Ormerod studied economics at the University of Hull, then learned photography at Trent Polytechnic and began working as a freelancer. Although he is a British photographer, Ormerod was fascinated by the American dream and American life. This book was published two years after Ormerod passed away in a traffic accident in 1991. After traveling to the United States many times, Ormerod depicted another America that deviated from capitalist society, such as desolate lands, rusty cityscapes with few people, and rural people represented by cowboys and motorbike riders. It is a beautiful and somewhat lonely road movie that recalls the documentaries left by previous masters such as Lee Friedlander and William Eggleston. A masterpiece of a private documentary that expresses the charm and current state of good old America from an exceptional perspective through a mixture of black and white and color illustrations.
