"Ama" (female divers) is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Yoshinobu Nakamura. Born in 1925 on Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, his father was one of the last fishing net owners on the island. Growing up surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea, he continued amateur photography even after joining Mitsubishi Smelting Plant, and studied under Yoichi Midorikawa, a leading photographer of the Seto Inland Sea. After turning 30, he became a professional photographer, depicting the local climate and culture through his photographs in works such as "The Seto Inland Sea" and "People of Setouchi," while also leaving behind significant works that convey the fading folklore of Japan, such as "Trains and Steam Locomotives" and "Ama." This book is a revised and expanded edition of Nakamura's representative work, "Japanese Ama," published in 1962. "Ama," who are now rarely seen due to the advent of wetsuits, are depicted bravely facing the seabed completely naked except for a loincloth, a figure that is both strong and graceful. This book not only comprehensively covers the ama (female diver) culture of Japan, including Tsushima, Noto, Shima, Echigo, Kazusa, Bungo, Rikuchu, Awa, Matsumae, and Amami, but also introduces the ama culture of Asia, such as Korea and Taiwan. It is a valuable record from an ethnological perspective. Commentary by Tsuneichi Miyamoto. Limited edition of 2500 copies. Numbered. Comes with a shipping box.
