"SENTO: The Japanese Public Bath in the 20th Century" is a photobook documenting public bathhouses throughout Japan. Photographer Shoji Onuma possesses a keen eye for capturing the living spaces and activities of people within urban areas. In this book, he visits public bathhouses remaining throughout 20th-century Japan, meticulously documenting their appearance, interior spaces, and even the smallest details of their decorations. Supervised by Shinobu Machida, a leading expert on public bathhouses, and with a preface by architectural historian Terunobu Fujimori, the book maintains a perspective that views public bathhouses not merely as bathing facilities, but as the core of local communities and cultural life. In addition to approximately 50 existing public bathhouses from Hokkaido to Okinawa, the book also includes records of 82 that have already disappeared, revealing a comprehensive picture of public bathhouse culture through diverse elements such as painted murals, tiles, and tools. This book holds significant visual and cultural-historical archive value, preserving a landscape that rapidly vanished after the period of rapid economic growth.
