"Carnival of Madness: Passionate Women of the South" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Masami Mochizuki (1944–). Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Mochizuki moved to Brazil at a young age and worked as a photographer for newspapers, television, and advertising, while also capturing the local culture. This book was published in 1981 as a special supplement to the film magazine "SCREEN," and consists of photographs that capture the energy and vibrant physical expression of the world-famous Rio Carnival. The dynamic figures of the samba dancers, the dazzling costumes of the parade, and the festive atmosphere of the city fill the pages with a strong sense of life and visual energy unique to South America. In Japan during the 1970s and 80s, Brazilian carnivals and samba culture were often introduced through magazines and photo spreads, and this book can be said to be one of the publications created against the backdrop of that era's interest. This book strongly reflects a longing for foreign cultures and the imagery of festivals, and also serves as a valuable document that conveys the visual culture of the time.
