"Atlas: of the Photographs Collages and Sketches" is a collection of works by German painter Gerhard Richter (1932–). Richter is a leading post-war European contemporary artist who has continuously explored the relationship between photography and painting through his photo-paintings and abstract paintings based on photographs. "Atlas" is Richter's representative project, which has been ongoing since the early 1960s, and is known as an archival work that organizes a vast amount of images, including photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, sketches, and personal photographs, into panels. Originally collected as material for painting, it gradually developed into an independent work and became an important project that visualizes the artist's visual thinking and creative process. This book is an early definitive edition of "Atlas," and a revised edition with significantly expanded content has been published since. "Gerhard Richter Atlas" also attracted considerable attention in Japan when an exhibition was held in 2001, starting with the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art and touring to the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art and the Oita Art Museum.
