"The Photographer's Cookbook" is a unique collection of photographs from the history of American photography. It originated in the late 1970s, when the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, commissioned photographers to submit their favorite recipes and food-related photographs. Unpublished at the time, the manuscripts and photographs remained in archives for a long time, but after nearly 40 years, Aperture republished the book for the first time in 2016. The book features recipes and food-related photographs from some of the most iconic photographers in 20th-century photography, including Ansel Adams' "Poached Eggs in Beer," Richard Avedon's roast dishes, Imogen Cunningham's borscht, and William Eggleston's grits. Through the familiar theme of cooking, the book offers a glimpse into the homes and daily lives of photographers, while also serving as a valuable time capsule of the photographic culture of the 1970s.
