Beach Umbrella (Signed) is a collection of works by American photographer Roe Ethridge (1969–). Ethridge is known for his unique photographic practice, which crosses the boundaries between art and commercial photography, incorporating the visual languages of fashion, advertising, and stock photography. This artist book, centered around his series of beach umbrellas, photographed in Rockaway Beach, New York, in the summer of 2020, captures broken umbrellas abandoned on the shore and other remnants of a "day at the beach" with vibrant colors and abstract compositions. Shot from below, facing the sun, the colored surfaces of fabric and the lines of metal frames transform everyday motifs into almost abstract images. Ethridge's signature visual world unfolds, blurring the boundaries between chance and staging, the everyday, and image culture, with additional images including sunflowers blooming in a Brooklyn schoolyard and fashion shoots.
