"Besstan Photo Album: White Wind" is a photo collection by leading Japanese photographer Shoji Ueda. A lifelong amateur, Ueda has continued to receive international acclaim for his numerous modern and experimental works, set against the backdrop of the sand dunes and natural scenery of his hometown, Tottori. This book features color photographs taken with the best-selling "Vest Pocket Kodak" camera, commonly known as the "Besstan" lens, released by Kodak in 1912. While this is an unusual work for Shoji Ueda, who is known for his beautiful black-and-white photography, Ueda was intrigued by the unique expressive techniques posed by the imperfect imaging capabilities of the Besstan lens. This collection of photographs captures the seasonal scenery of his hometown's farming, mountain, and fishing villages in San'in over the course of a year. This book traces the trajectory of this great photographer's experimental expression, as he explored new photographic possibilities using a camera that, unlike black-and-white, has limitations on printing and technology. Includes text by Koshio Kuwahara.
