SLANT is a collection of works by American photographer Aaron Schuman. Schuman is deeply interested in the relationship between photography, words, and editorial structure, exploring the discrepancies and discomforts that arise from the juxtaposition of these elements rather than the images themselves. In this work, he combines short essays from the "Police Reports" section of local newspapers in and around Amherst, Massachusetts, with photographs taken in the area, creating a deliberate dissonance between text and image. What initially began as an intimate perspective on small town life gradually takes on a more ominous tone against the backdrop of the anxiety and doubt that has pervaded American society since 2016. The title, derived from the concept of "slant rhyme" used by poet Emily Dickinson, who had ties to the area, alludes to the incomplete relationship between photography and words. This book quietly reveals the distortions and tensions that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life through structure rather than explanation.
