Sunless is a collection of works by French visual artist Tian Doan Na Champasak (1973-). Long a subject of sexuality and gender identity, the artist recontextualizes diverse images from the internet, magazines, and personal archives to explore the dynamics of viewing desire and censorship. Based on photographs taken in Thailand between 2012 and 2013, this work combines fragments of the city with bodies that blur the boundaries between male and female. By juxtaposing the lustrous colors of Ilfochrome with the rigidity of monochrome architecture, the work also highlights the social and urban environments in which these spaces of desire are situated. Historically, this work is positioned as an attempt to connect queer perspectives and experimental printmaking with the traditions of nude and eroticism. It quietly raises questions about whose gaze defines these bodies and what kinds of images we accept as "beautiful."
