Le Dépays is a collection of works by French filmmaker and photographer Chris Marker (1921–2012). Exploring "memory" and "travel" while shifting between documentary and poetic thought, he visited Japan in the early 1980s and captured fragments of an unfamiliar city in quiet monochrome. This book features scenes emblematic of everyday life in Japan: subway passengers, cats lingering on street corners, and the hustle and bustle of urban areas teeming with advertisements and neon lights. For Marker, however, these were not simply records of a foreign land; they were devices for capturing the sensations born when encountering "other places"—moments in which nostalgia and alienation simultaneously arise. The interplay of photographs and short texts modestly reexamines the distances between place and memory, time and the self. Walking through a foreign land, somehow returning to oneself. This book quietly evokes the feeling of that short journey with each turn of the page. Published in 2024, reprint edition.
