"Pontocho" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Masanobu Seike. After graduating from Tokyo University of Photography in 1976, he began working as a freelance photographer, shooting advertisements and commercials. While pursuing a tranquil, intimate world through his intimate gaze, Seike has meticulously captured the momentary fluctuations of light and the emotions inherent in his subjects' presence, and is acutely responsive to the unique sense of time in Kyoto. This book features a series of photographs of geisha and maiko in Kyoto's Pontocho district. Their everyday presence, hidden behind their gorgeous costumes and demeanor, quietly evokes the passage of time and the memories of their bodies. In particular, the "original platinum print" design meticulously captures the texture and nuances of light in the photographs, providing a high-quality experience for the viewer. By capturing the traditional existence of geisha and maiko not only as "elegant" but also as "the flow of time" and "presence," Seike gently brings to light the story hidden within the scene.
