"Free Wind" is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Kiyoshi Kawakami. He taught at Tokyo Photography College (now Tokyo Visual Arts) and served as an assistant professor in the Department of Photography at Nihon University College of Art. While the details of his career are unclear, this book is his first photo collection, published in 1974. It is comprised of images taken over a period of approximately eight years between the 1960s and 1970s in Tokyo, Ibaraki, Nagano, Yamagata, and Aomori, and the content is truly remarkable. Set primarily in the countryside rather than the city, Kawakami's images beautifully capture the "fleeting encounters" between nature and humans. Rather than the typical heavy rural landscape photography, his works are light-hearted, incorporating modern sensibilities and composite elements, typical of works from around the 1970s. While minimizing subjective elements, the book conveys the photographer's tender feelings of love for his subjects and people. Its sense of balance, moderation, and elegance are captivating. Limited to 1,000 copies.
