Japanese photographer Yukinaga Iijima's collection of works, "Cold Current: Women of Tsugaru / Echigo, Snowy Joy (Signed)," is available now. Born in Tokyo in 1942, he graduated from Tokyo College of Photography and studied under pioneering nude photographer Kira Sugiyama before going independent. He became famous for his portraits of Japanese painters such as Shoko Uemura, Tatsuo Takayama, and Toichi Kato, as well as other artists and celebrities. His signature documentary work is "Cold Current." In the 1970s, he explored the snow-covered Tohoku region, documenting people living positively and kindly despite the blizzards, cold, and poverty, focusing on the themes of "climate" and "people." He also photographed women living on the Tsugaru Peninsula. His "Cold Current" series, reminiscent of Hiroshi Hamaya's work, depicts the resilient, kind, and beautiful people who struggle against nature on the other side of Japan's economic growth. A companion volume, "Warm Current," which focuses on the climate and people of the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa, was also published at the same time. Obi missing.
